In this desana by Ven. Waharaka Thero, the gist of it is that when we transfer merits it may be misued by other beings (0.50s), eg some being can use the energy from this merits to do evil things.

At 1.40, he goes on to say “there’ve been a kind of contest in the spirt realm a year or so”

At 2.50 he says that we should limit the transfer to “samyak dittika deva (gods with right beliefs)” instead of to everyone.

At 4.31 he says that it is not wise to transfer to all those “who’ve been harmed, hurt, or wronged in anyway duing the infinite samsara”

At 7.48 he also mentions how it can be a problem if we try to transfer merits to all dead relatives and friends, without limiting to those with samma dittika

At 9.45, he even says that it does not work to wish for those micca dittika to be free from micca ditti! This is strange because I thought that in Metta Bhavana we are wishing for all beings to learn the dhamma and be free from suffering and theur false views.

Can someone confirm if what I interpret is correct?

In the early days, well before he became a bhikkhu, Waharaka Thero was involved in interactions with “unseen beings” of immoral character. Such activities were more common in those days.

      • He gave up such activities after focusing on the deep Dhamma.

I don’t think we need to worry about such effects. When cultivating metta bhavana, spread metta to “all beings” without distinction.

      • I have not had any issues, and I also heard about such an issue only from one or two people. Unless one starts focusing on such “unseen beings” they cannot bother us.
