Five negative qualities that obstruct the attainment of magga phala and Jhānas.

      I found a series of suttas that said that someone with these five qualities cannot attain a jhāna or even the sotāpanna stage. I was surprised because many of these qualities seem to apply to monks and nuns, but I believe that they also apply to Laypeople. Can Sir Lal or someone see if it is correct? The Pañcamacchariyasutta states that stinginess with the teaching is the worst. Can Sir Lal explain in detail what this stinginess is and how it blocks the magga phala ?

      Dutiyajhānasuttādisattaka

      Mendicants, without giving up these five qualities, you can’t enter and remain in the second absorption … third absorption … fourth absorption … or realize the fruit of stream-entry … the fruit of once-return … the fruit of non-return … perfection.

      What five?

      Stinginess with dwellings, families, material things, praise, and the teachings.

      Without giving up these five qualities, you can’t realize perfection.

      But after giving up these five qualities, you can enter and remain in the second absorption … third absorption … fourth absorption … and realize the fruit of stream-entry … the fruit of once-return … the fruit of non-return … perfection.

      What five?

      Stinginess with dwellings, families, material things, praise, and the teachings.

      After giving up these five qualities, you can realize perfection.”

      Pañcime, bhikkhave, dhamme appahāya abhabbo dutiyaṁ jhānaṁ …pe… abhabbo tatiyaṁ jhānaṁ … abhabbo catutthaṁ jhānaṁ … abhabbo sotāpattiphalaṁ … abhabbo sakadāgāmiphalaṁ … abhabbo anāgāmiphalaṁ … abhabbo arahattaṁ sacchikātuṁ.  Katame pañca?       The suttas you quoted are two of a series starting with “Pañcamacchariya Sutta (AN 5.254)” which state the five kinds of extreme greed (macchariya).

      • I would translate the five as, “extreme greed for dwellings, family lineage (if born in a ‘high class’ or wealthy family), expensive material possessions, praise and respect from others, and (sharing one’s knowledge of) Dhamma.”

      It is a good idea to look at the series of suttas starting with the above.

      • The next sutta (AN 5.255) says one must give them up to live a spiritual life.
      • The subsequent suttas state one cannot attain any jhanas or magga phala if one doesn’t give them up.
      • That makes sense, doesn’t it?
