ParticipantI came across an interesting sutta about the sotāpanna anugami. The sutta explains that they have crossed the Marā stream and are therefore safe. It discusses various stages of enlightenment, including arahants, anagamis, sakadāgāmis, sotāpannas, and sotāpanna anugami. Different analogies are used, particularly with herd animals. The sotāpanna anugami is compared to a newborn calf that, despite being young, successfully crosses the stream safely.
Just like the baby calf who had just been born, but, urged on by its mother’s lowing, still managed to cross the Ganges to safety
Seyyathāpi so, bhikkhave, vacchako taruṇako tāvadeva jātako mātugoravakena vuyhamāno tiriyaṁ gaṅgāya sotaṁ chetvā sotthinā pāraṁ agamāsi;
are the mendicants who are followers of teachings, followers by faith. They too, having breasted Māra’s stream, will safely cross over to the far shore.
evameva kho, bhikkhave, ye te bhikkhū dhammānusārino saddhānusārino, tepi tiriyaṁ mārassa sotaṁ chetvā sotthinā pāraṁ gamissanti.
Mendicants, I am skilled in this world and the other world, skilled in Māra’s dominion and its opposite, and skilled in Death’s dominion and its opposite. If anyone thinks I am worth listening to and trusting, it will be for their lasting welfare and happiness.”
Ahaṁ kho pana, bhikkhave, kusalo imassa lokassa kusalo parassa lokassa, kusalo māradheyyassa kusalo amāradheyyassa, kusalo maccudheyyassa kusalo amaccudheyyassa. Tassa mayhaṁ, bhikkhave, ye sotabbaṁ saddahātabbaṁ maññissanti, tesaṁ taṁ bhavissati dīgharattaṁ hitāya sukhāyā”ti.

Keymaster1. There are eight Ariyā (Noble Persons) or “aṭṭha purisa puggalā”. They are Sōtapanna Anugāmi, Sōtapanna, Sakadāgāmi Anugāmi, Sakadāgāmi, Anāgāmi Anugāmi, Anāgāmi, Arahant Anugāmi, and Arahant.
- The term “Cula Sotāpanna” is used by some (in the Commentaries) to denote a Sōtapanna Anugāmi. However, I have not seen that term in the Sutta Pitaka.
- In the Sutta Pitaka, a Sōtapanna Anugāmi is categorized in two types: Dhammānusārī and Saddhānusārī. See #2 of Sōtapanna Anugāmi – No More Births in the Apāyās.
- In the sutta quoted by Jittananto, those two categories are also mentioned: “evameva kho, bhikkhave, ye te bhikkhū dhammānusārino saddhānusārino, tepi tiriyaṁ mārassa sotaṁ chetvā sotthinā pāraṁ gamissanti.”
2. The “Khandha Sutta (SN 25.10)” is a short sutta that describes how one can become a Dhammānusārī and Saddhānusārī, and that they are also released from rebirth in the apayas.
