      Dhātuvibhaṅga

Aṭṭhārasa dhātuyo —cakkhudhātu, rūpadhātu, cakkhuviññāṇadhātu, sotadhātu, saddadhātu, sotaviññāṇadhātu, ghānadhātu, gandhadhātu, ghānaviññāṇadhātu, jivhādhātu, rasadhātu, jivhāviññāṇadhātu, kāyadhātu, phoṭṭhabbadhātu, kāyaviññāṇadhātu, manodhātu, dhammadhātu, manoviññāṇadhātu.

There are some interesting points in dhatuvibhanga.

      Tattha katamā cakkhudhātu?

Yaṁ cakkhu catunnaṁ mahābhūtānaṁ upādāya pasādo …pe… suñño gāmopeso—ayaṁ vuccati “cakkhudhātu”.

      Tattha katamā rūpadhātu?

Yaṁ rūpaṁ catunnaṁ mahābhūtānaṁ upādāya vaṇṇanibhā …pe… rūpadhātupesā—ayaṁ vuccati “rūpadhātu”.

      Tattha katamā cakkhuviññāṇadhātu?

Cakkhuñca paṭicca rūpe ca uppajjati cittaṁ mano mānasaṁ hadayaṁ paṇḍaraṁ mano manāyatanaṁ manindriyaṁ viññāṇaṁ viññāṇakkhandho tajjācakkhuviññāṇadhātu—ayaṁ vuccati “cakkhuviññāṇadhātu”.

Up to the first five senses, plain statements appear. (also, each of them states nine stages of contamination of citta.)

And then, from the sixth, a remarkable statement showes.

      manodhātu

      Tattha katamā manodhātu?

      Cakkhuviññāṇadhātuyā uppajjitvā niruddhasamanantarā uppajjati cittaṁ mano mānasaṁ hadayaṁ paṇḍaraṁ mano manāyatanaṁ manindriyaṁ viññāṇaṁ viññāṇakkhandho tajjāmanodhātu;

      sotaviññāṇadhātuyā …pe…

      ghānaviññāṇadhātuyā …pe…

      jivhāviññāṇadhātuyā …pe…

kāyaviññāṇadhātuyā uppajjitvā niruddhasamanantarā uppajjati cittaṁ mano mānasaṁ hadayaṁ paṇḍaraṁ mano manāyatanaṁ manindriyaṁ viññāṇaṁ viññāṇakkhandho tajjāmanodhātu

sabbadhammesu vā pana paṭhamasamannāhāro uppajjati cittaṁ mano mānasaṁ hadayaṁ paṇḍaraṁ mano manāyatanaṁ manindriyaṁ viññāṇaṁ viññāṇakkhandho tajjāmanodhātu— ayaṁ vuccati “manodhātu”.

Manodhātu includes all five other “citta -> viññāṇakkhandho” processes.

The same statements also show in manoviññāṇadhātu.

Then what is the difference between manodhatu and manovinnanadhatu?

I think that “sabbadhammesu vā pana paṭhamasamannāhāro” can be a clue. Because it shows only in manodhatu.

Just like “cakkhu dhātu” evolves into “cakkhuviññāṇa dhātu,” “mano dhātu” evolves into “manouviññāṇa dhātu.”

      • The first five (cakkhu, sota, ghāna, jivhā, kāya) are active (in addition to mano) in the kama loka and rupa loka.
      • None of the first five are present in the arupa loka; it has only the mind (mano.)

Similarly, in arupa loka, the mind is triggered by dhammā and develops into “manouviññāṇa dhātu.”

      • Of course, it is also triggered by the five physical senses in kama loka; for example, “Cakkhuviññāṇadhātuyā uppajjitvā niruddhasamanantarā uppajjati cittaṁ mano mānasaṁ hadayaṁ paṇḍaraṁ mano manāyatanaṁ manindriyaṁ viññāṇaṁ viññāṇakkhandho tajjā mano dhātu.”

Yes. “sabba dhammesu” refers to that.

      • I will start a new series to discuss that in detail after finalizing a post or two on “kama guna.” Please hold further questions until then.
